The first confirmed case of the measles was announced this week in the county. Since then, health officials said the person had visited additional locations and anyone who also visited in the same time frame may have been exposed to measles.
The locations include:
- King Kullen, 52 East Montauk Highway, Hampton Bays, on Saturday, April 20, between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
- CVS, 111 South Main St., Southampton on Saturday, April 20, between 4:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.
These times reflect the period that the infected individual was at these locations and a two-hour period after the individual left the area, as the virus remains alive in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours.
To date, there have been 681 measles cases reported in 22 states this year, according to health officials. Between Jan. 1 and Monday, April 21, the Centers for Disease Control said that there have been 626 individual cases confirmed, an increase of 71 in the past week.
The states reporting measles cases are Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.
Last month, UNICEF warned that “global cases of measles are surging to alarmingly high levels, led by 10 countries accounting for more than 74 percent of the total increase and several others that had previously been declared measles free.
All individuals who were exposed to measles should contact their health care provider to assess their measles immunity, Suffolk County officials said.
